The movie entitled “How to lose a Guy in Ten Days” is about a write named Andie Anderson, a writer in the “How To” section of the composure magazine, who wants to write more than what she is allowed to write about at the present. She helps her friend, who just got dumped by her boyfriend, by offering that she’d write about her friend’s misfortune by using it as her inspiration which she entitled “How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days”. Her boss loved it so much that she saw it as an opportunity to write more than what she was “allowed to”. What she didn’t expect was falling in love with her guinea pig, Benjamin Berry, whom she met at a party. Little did she know that Ben was in a bet. He had to hunting for a girl, make her fall in love with him, and bring her at the party that the company that they are currently working with will be hosting which is also the tenth day of the Andie’s experiment.
Expectancy:
Andie expected that she’d be able to find a guy for her experiment in the party that night, make him fall-in love with her, and then dump her in less than ten days. After working with her paper she’d be free to write about everything that she wants.
On the other hand, Ben expects find a girl that night, make her fall in love with him, and bring her with him in the launching that the company there are working with will host for their product so that he’d be able to handle the transactions of that company and their company. But the girl has to really fall in love with him.
His first impression towards Andie when he saw her was that she was lovely, fun to be with since they seemed to have a lot in common, and cool. He expects that he’d be able to make her fall in love, bring her to the launching, and maybe have a really good relationship with her.
Violation Valence:
Andie has to make Ben fall in love by being cool and fun, which is really what she is, then she’d act the things that most girls do wrong. Like baby talking, leave messages on his phone to check where he is, disturbing him while he’s working, being over sensitive or over reacting at little things, placing her make-up and other girl stuff in his house (anything pink to be exact), giving a girly name for his penis, and ruining his boy's- night-out or other activities boys usually do, and a lot more.
There are times though that she’d forget what she ought to be doing and act the way she really is. Like when they went to visit Ben’s parents, when she and Ben went to watch their first ball game together, when Ben fought with a man bigger than him, and when Ben read the article. Andie’s sending both negative and positive values to Ben. Negative by acting the way boys don’t want their girlfriends doing. And positive by acing the way she really is.
Ben is also sending positive and negative values. He tried hard to save their “relationship” and he was the way he really was when they first met. He never concealed his true nature. But he, as what I’ve said earlier, also has his hidden agenda for the relationship. This, to me, is the negative value.
Communicator Reward Valence:
Andie tried to do the wrong this girls in a relationship usually do. But the effect of her actions didn’t seem to work since Ben was also sending her positive values. He badly wanted to get the promotion and handle the account of the company heir working with. He tired to understand her, forgave her, and tried not to lose his temper. Even if he wanted to yell at her he didn’t and he played along with her. He kept cool and insisted that they’d meet again. Seems like he wouldn’t give up and she didn’t know why. Unknowingly she also sent him positive values but that just made Ben fall in love with her all the more. Example when she didn’t act all girly when Ben and her visited his parents.
When both learned what the other was doing to the other they rewarded each other negatively resulting to their break-up, but not entirely negative things resulted. Ben got the account but lost the girl whom he thinks played him. Andie got the big break she always wanted but decided to more to Washington to be able to write out of the scope her boss said. She also realized that she really did love her and he loved her too. It’s evident when he chased to stop her from flying to Washington.
The last article that she wrote for that magazine also sent a positive value to Ben. When he had the chance to go through it he learned the girl really had feeling for him. The response was a positive reward. He chased and stopped her from flying to Washington.
Conclusion:
The E.V.T. is applicable to the movie. It really helped explain why Andie and Ben acted that way they did, what idea or result it would give to both parties, and how they should have reacted when both parties acted differently. When they didn’t act the way they should have acted. But it seems that it lacked a few explanations on few points. It failed to predict the outcome or reaction of Ben. Ben’s reactions were very opposite to what Andie expect it to be since she’s been sending negative values on purpose. She didn’t know why since their relationship only started a few days ago and he didn’t want to break-up with her. Normally guys would have dumped her and wouldn’t consider it a waste since you barely know each other.
It also failed to predict Andie’s reaction since both of them are just acting. But there are times that she isn’t. Ben didn’t understand why there are times when she’s fun and there are times that she a pain in the neck. Normally, a girl won’t act all possessive, paranoid, emotional, and weird all at the same time. And to think that your relationship just started about 5 ago. It failed to explain what a person’s reaction would be if he wanted that relationship to stay given that the other person didn’t know about it and their characteristics didn’t change. The girl was surprised that Ben was still willing to be with her after all that she has done.
But all in all the theory did a good job explaining the possible outcome of the both character’s actions towards each other.
